Auto Insurance Coverage Types

This coverage has two parts. The first is the liability section of the policy. It covers your financial responsibility for injuring others and some coverage is required by most states.

The second part covers the car itself: comprehensive coverage reimburses losses from fire, theft or other perils; collision coverage pays to repair losses caused by an accident. Often this coverage is mandated by leasing companies or banks. There are also ancillary medical, car rental and other coverages which vary by state.

Utilizing high deductibles on the physical damage coverages can help reduce premiums. If you carry umbrella insurance, you must be sure that you carry the required amount of basic liability insurance to avoid a gap in coverage for a serious accident.

Property Damage Liability

This coverage pays for damage to someone else’s property caused by your vehicle, whether you are driving it, or someone else is driving it with your permission. In vehicle accidents, this usually means someone else’s car is damaged. But this coverage also includes damage to other types of property, including fences, poles, homes, or other structures your car may have hit.

Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily Injury Liability covers injuries caused to someone else either by the policyholder, or any other residence member included on the policy. It applies whether the injury is caused when you are driving your own vehicle, or you’re driving someone else’s vehicle with their permission.

Comprehensive

If your car is stolen or damaged by something other than an accident with another vehicle, comprehensive coverage will compensate you for loss or damages minus your deductible. This typically includes natural disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, hail, falling objects, vandalism or colliding with animals. Glass breakage varies by state but may also be included within comprehensive coverage. Ask your agent for details.

Collision

This coverage compensates you if your vehicle is damaged as a result of colliding with another car or object, or if your car flips over. If you are at fault in an accident, collision coverage will pay for the cost of repairing your vehicle, minus your deductible. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium.

If you are not at fault, your collision coverage will still pay to have your car repaired, but you still have to pay the deductible. Your insurance company may try to recover the cost of repairs from the at-fault driver’s insurance company.

Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

If you or any passengers in your vehicle are injured in an accident, PIP will pay for treatment. In some cases, a PIP may extend to further medical costs like rehabilitation, and may also cover other expenses resulting from accident injuries such as lost wages, and even funeral costs.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

If you, or anyone else permitted to drive your vehicle is involved in an accident caused by an uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run driver, this will reimburse you for damage to your vehicle. It will also cover you if the other driver does not have sufficient insurance coverage to pay for a total loss of your vehicle. This coverage also protects you if you are hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian. There is a lot of information to understand so let us be your trusted advisor. Auto Safety Tips

Safe Drivers...

  • DO wear your seatbelt.
  • DO make sure everyone in the car wears a seatbelt (or sits in an appropriate child-safety seat) before you start the car.
  • DO park wisely. Choose a well-lit area of a parking lot or street. And if you're in an unfamiliar area, try to stay near well-traveled streets.
  • DO ignore sign language from other drivers.
  • DO look into cars with airbags and anti-lock brakes.
  • DO remember that speed limits are not posted arbitrarily. They're set to keep traffic moving steadily and to reduce accidents--and they're based on years of studying traffic patterns and conditions. Also, remember that accidents increase as the speed limit does.

DON'T be a lousy driver.

There are a lot of people out there setting an example, but you don't have to follow. Slow down. Back off. Use your signals. Yield. Remember the basics.

  • DON'T drink and drive. DO call a cab, designate a driver, take public transportation, call a spontaneous slumber party. Just use your head.
  • DON'T try to do too many things at once. Talking on a cellular phone or biting into a fully-loaded cheeseburger while you drive is flirting with disaster.
  • DON'T choose a car for its aesthetic appeal alone.
  • DON'T slack off on the maintenance. Letting the fluids or tires get low or letting bulbs burn out can get you in a lot of trouble.
  • DON'T let the cats out of their carriers on the way to the vet. Trust us.
  • DID we mention your seatbelt?

Safety isn't the first thing on a person's mind when they're looking at a sporty little roadster, but it is something to keep in mind. Generally, the larger the car, the greater protection it will provide in an accident. Check out the Highway Loss Data Institute's ratings of car makes and models at www.carsafety.org.

You're less likely to have your car stolen if you...

  • DO always close your windows and lock the doors when you leave your vehicle.
  • DO park in the garage (that is, if you have one). Cars are rarely stolen from garages, but frequently "disappear" from driveways and open spaces near homes.
  • DO use your antitheft device. If you keep it turned off, it's not a deterrent, it's a waste of money.
  • DO, when you park, turn your wheels toward the street until the steering wheel locks. This makes it a lot more difficult to push or tow your car away.
  • DON'T leave your keys in the car while it's unattended--running or not. In fact, never leave it running if you have to step away. Even for a second.
  • DON'T leave your house keys behind. If your car were stolen, you'd want to be the one that winds up with keys to your home.
  • DON'T leave anything of value--a roll of $100 bills, your wallet, your trombone--in the car. You'd be amazed at what people might steal. If you must leave something, make sure it's out of sight.
  • DON'T wait until you've found your parking spot to stow things out of sight. You never know who might be watching you take the extra effort to put things away.
  • DON'T forget that it's just a car. If someone wants it badly enough to stop you and ask you for it--however impolitely--don't take any unnecessary risks. Cars can be replaced.
Other Types of Vehicle Insurance

Motorcycles

Whether you’re an enthusiast or a first-timer, having fun, being responsible and being safe is what it’s all about. Being responsible includes finding the right insurance for your motorcycle.

Motorcycle insurance is a way of sharing the risks of riding between you and your insurance company. The way it works is simple. You pay a set premium to an insurance company for coverage. In return, the company promises to pay for specific financial losses that might occur during the term of the policy.

Most people rely on motorcycle insurance to protect themselves against loss in case of an accident. In many states, you must carry basic insurance to cover the cost of losses you cause to others in an accident. If the unexpected happens, insurance gives you peace of mind in knowing you are protected. We have a variety of motorcycle policy options to meet your needs.

Motor Home & RV

As much as you expend efforts to purchase your dream motor home, it is important to select appropriate motor home insurance policy. Legally speaking, you are required to have a certain minimum amount of coverage when you have your motor home registered. However, there are many insurance policies to ensure that your motor home obtains maximum coverage and protection. It is important to choose a policy that incorporates the recreational value of your motor home and does not treat it as another automobile.

Boat & Marine

Boat or Marine insurance is available for small boats, yachts, high performance powerboats, live-aboard houseboats, catamarans, or pontoons. Marine insurance will cover intended use including personal recreation, commercial, or charter vessels.

Boat policies can cover damage to your boat, motor, trailer, and personal effects in the boat. Available coverage includes liability, medical payments, injury to a water skier and damage to the boat itself, sometime called hull coverage. Availability varies by state and by insurance company. Even though boat insurance premiums are low, shopping your rate can sometimes save a substantial amount.

Personal Watercraft

Personal watercraft, such as jet skis and wave runners, are often our customer's first step into the boating world. Personal watercraft are extremely invigorating and fun for water lovers of all ages; however, they are not toys. Whether you are a first time boater or experienced captain, it is important that you have proper coverage for these vessels. First American Property & Casualty has policies that are geared specifically for your personal watercraft. Likewise, because of our expertise in this area we also have the ability to provide commercial marine insurance for companies that rent personal watercraft.
